Preparation and Procedure of USG in Pregnancy

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India recommends a minimum of four ultrasonography (USG) in pregnancy. The World Health Organisation recommends one USG before 24 weeks of gestation for antenatal care.

But what is pregnancy ultrasonography? It is an ultrasound test that produces the image of the mother’s reproductive organs and her developing baby using high-frequency sound waves. The test helps in monitoring normal fetal development and screening for any problems early so they can be prevented. So, consider visiting the best maternity hospital in Bangalore to receive your pregnancy ultrasound in time.

Preparation for an Ultrasonography

You may be required to have a full bladder during a USG earlier in your pregnancy. This helps the technician to receive a clear image of your reproductive organs and foetus. Therefore, it’s good to drink two to three 8-ounce glasses of water an hour before the appointment. You must not urinate before the USG to make sure you arrive with a full bladder for the procedure.

The Procedure of an Ultrasonography

During a USG in pregnancy, you need to lie down on a bed or examination table. The technician applies a medical gel to your pelvic area and abdomen. The gel being water-based, usually doesn’t leave marks on your skin or clothes. Rather it allows the sound waves to travel properly.

After this, the technician puts a tiny wand (transducer) on your belly. He/she moves the device to capture black and white images on the USG screen and may measure them as well. You may need to hold your breath or move as directed when the medical team captures images.

After making sure that all the necessary images have been captured and are clear, the technician wipes off the applied gel. Then finally, you’re allowed to empty your bladder.

Uses of Ultrasound Scan

During pregnancy, different ultrasound procedures may be carried out at distinct stages of foetal growth for the following purposes:

  • Early viability scan: Generally, this kind of USG is performed in early pregnancy to observe the number of gestational sacs, the reproductive structures like the ovaries and uterus, and the cardiac activity of your foetus. The scan also helps in dating the foetus.
  • Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scan: It is performed between the 11th and 13th weeks of pregnancy to eliminate the presence of Down’s syndrome or other syndromes. The test is carried out when your baby is 45-84mm long.
  • Anomaly scan: This test is generally done between the 18th and 20th weeks of pregnancy to observe the development of the baby’s major organs like the brain, spinal cord, heart, kidneys, limbs and others.
  • Growth scan: It is generally done after the 30th week to check the baby’s growth, movements and blood flow, amount of the amniotic food, the status of the placenta, and some other important parameters.

Now that you see ultrasonography is vital in pregnancy, ensure to pay a visit to the best maternity hospital in Bangalore for all the necessary pregnancy tests. This can give you much-needed peace of mind.
